le morte de Wile E. Coyote

I grew up on Warner Bros. Cartoons. Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and of course, Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote were all well known names in my household. It was entertainment for three generations as there were many times my Grandfather, my Father and my brothers and I would sit and enjoy those timeless Looney Tunes on Saturday Mornings on ABC.

Those times are long gone since ABC was bought out by Disney and not even TimeWarner’s Cartoon Network still airs what was, to me, the peak of the American Animated Humor Short Feature.

It would seem, also, that the “stars” of those shorts have fared no better according to recent exhibition work by artist Hyungkoo Lee. Lee’s show Animatus, formerly displayed at Arario Gallery, and now on display in Turin, Italy through January, offers up the sad remains of some of America’s most beloved icons. Vote “REVOLTING” by December 4th!

Merriam-Webster, those fine people who brought you the dictionary are curious to find the one word that best summizes 2006.

Nominations can be made at:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/info/06words.htm

The war, the evangelicals, Exxon-Mobil, the Bush admin, the Pope’s statements and everything else that has gone down this year has prompted me to nominate “REVOLTING” as my personal word of the year. Voting ends Decmber 4th, 2006.

What’s your word for 2006?

It’s Like Rex Morgan and Mary Worth moved to Bloom County, only the women are prettier and there’s not so many pop-culture references…

I’m talking about Liberty Meadows by Frank Cho, and yes, that IS how I would describe it in 25 words or less.

Liberty Meadows started out as a syndicated strip in newspapers, but creative differences led Mr. Cho, or “Monkey Boy” as he refers to himself, to seek other publishing avenues. Namely, collections published monthly by Image Comics.

Now, the strip, itself, revolves around gorgeous women, ineffectual men, and mostly bawdy, but sometimes cute and cuddly animals interrelating in, around and throughout fictional Liberty Meadows Animal Sanctuary. There’s romance, intrigue, mystery, comedy, suspense, and…breasts? That’s right, Breasts. Lots of Breasts! In fact, Frank Cho likes breasts so much that during a recent stint on New Avengers, penciled by Cho, Ms. Marvel singlehandedly defeats the villain known as KLAW with only her breasts ( It had something to do with energy absorption, go figure).

His draftsmanship is impeccable. His people are cartoons, yes, seldom over the top in exaggeration or expression, but rendered with such sparse economy of line as to make them seem effortless. His animals are of the bombastic, “kablooey” sort, full of whimsy and crass adult salaciousness. The lettering, while most definitely stylized, only adds to the overall manic feeling of the strip. All of this, together with the absurdist and hilarious writing and gags, makes Liberty Meadows a shining example of what newspaper comics could be- but then again, why should something this great be relegated to the musty confines of the “Features” section in a newspaper- People would probably mistake it for just another bland and humorless diversion placed next to Family Circus or above Jump Start.

I finally admit to it…

Throughout my life, I’ve gone back and forth on spectator sports…I like baseball (Cleveland Indians or whomever is beating the Braves), I hate basketball (college and professional, unless a team from outside of North Carolina makes it to the Final Four), and I seldom make an effort to keep up on Football. With one Exception. Division 1-AA College Football, and only one game in particular. I’m talking about Appalachian State University vs. Western Carolina University, aka. The Battle for the Old Mountain Jug!

Two unknown teams, with mostly unknown players, square off every year in a rivalry every bit as real and raw as FSU vs. UF.

The Western Carolina Catamounts (2-7) are set to host the defending Conference Champion Appalachian State Mountaineers (9-1) this Saturday at 4PM at Whitmire Stadium in Cullowhee, North Carolina. If anyone knows where this game is being televised- if at all- please tell me! I’ll be wearing my black and gold all day, regardless. GO MOUNTIES!!

Natural Birthday Wishes!

Today is the twenty-third birthday of my long-lost and wayward brother, Matthew, aka. Natural. He is on the Appalachian Trail somewhere south of Harpers Ferry, W. VA, and presumably headed southbound towards Springer Mountain, GA. I hope his day is filled with warm sun, cool winds and plenty of easy traveling!
Happy Birthday, Matt!

More than meets the eyes…sort of.

Been falling into that trap of searching for information on the upcoming Transformers Movie from Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg. I’m excited and curious but all I find online are doomsayers, I mean some of the stuff I hear is troubling…(COUGH)Bumblebee(koffkoff!)…but I’m hoping they were smart enough to take some clues from their predecessors (television shows, 3 generations of comics continuity- the lifetime of work by people like Simon Furman and Bob Budiansky, as well as some tips from Sam Raimi on translating a comic property to live action. I’m sure there’s good and bad, so I might as well wait and see, right?

Anyways, found these on the computer…old digital hoax assignment…they’re fun though.

I have seen the iPod, and it is GOOD!

Today, as a bonus for my hard work, my boss bestowed upon me a brand new iPod Video. It is a beautiful thing. Sleek, elegant, well-designed, and FREE.

Now I can join the millions of ear-bud sporting minions who traverse the surface of our orbital sphere daily, completely oblivious to the world around me, as I jam to digital recordings of the human races’ greatest musical triumphs

Like… Britney Spears.
